October 28-November 1, 2019 - "How was Book Fair?" (Part 1)

Writer's picture: Darren TanakaDarren Tanaka

That's the question I get asked multiple times a day. The one word answer: FUN!

My evidence?

- the smiles on the faces coming and going

- the oohs and ahhs and whoa! we hear from excited kids and adults

- the homemade cardboard constructed games created by my students during library class (and the spontaneous dance party that happened as a way to attract people to the fun

I have not finished the financial report so I can't share the breakdown by numbers just yet, but a lot of kids went home with a lot of great books. Parents had meaningful conversations with their children that reflected the value of reading. Dads and moms reminisced about books they read when they were little. Kids learned how to handle money and make those tough decisions we all face as consumers. Young artists got to create and display their drawings. It was all just -- fun!

On Wednesday, we had a "reading blizzard" (paper snowballs containing the wish from a student for a particular book in the book fair.). After the blizzard, Principal Doherty selected 23 snowballs and made 23 wishes come true, with each lucky student receiving their book fair book at no cost. (And a big Mahalo to custodian Trevor and library assistant Mrs. Anderson for helping me put away the sound system we used for the Character Parade!) Thursday and Friday was especially busy with all the parents attending teacher conferences. It was such a blessing to help families find books to enjoy together.

In the brief moments between customer visits, I had some quiet time to explore the new books also. And after the fair closed on Friday afternoon, the library fulfilled the remaining classroom wishes of the teachers. In library classes, Grades 3-6 students were encouraged to revisit their Accelerated Reader levels and goals, and had time to select some books they would enjoy reading. Students also enjoyed some time browsing the book fair. Grade 1 celebrated National Cat Day with a Japanese folktale featuring 3 samurai cats.
