Truth, Joy, Connection!

How can the library help learners discern truth from fiction when it's so easy to lie these days, especially on the Internet?

How can the library celebrate the joy that comes with reading?

How can the library do a better job at connecting people?

That's the three big take-aways I got out of this year's Schools of the Future conference I attended before the Fall Break. I shared with the students the importance of being curious and wondering about things, seeking out opportunities to learn, and then actually applying what we learn to enrich the lives of others around us.

Here are some highlights from last week: • PreK, Kindergarten and Grade 1 enjoyed stories that celebrated "National Grouch Day" (Sesame Street's Oscar, we talked about feelings and what we can do/shouldn't do with them) and "National Chocolate Cupcake Day" (we talked about treats and sweets and nutrition).

• Second graders began their research on Hawaiian monk seals as part of a potentially global sharing art project called "Beauty of the beasts". More details to come.

• Students in grades 3-6 continued developing their student-driven PBLs (project based learning).

• The Book Fair student crew got busy making posters, decorations, and games. Book Fair is coming on October 28-November 1

• "Loco Moco" (our fourth grade, kids-only house band) practiced songs nearly every recess and lunch.

• Two published authors are coming to Kailua Elementary! Plans were made for Brandon Mull (Fablehaven, Dragonwatch) and local artist/author Lance Fairly to share their passion with our children. More details coming soon.

• Kailua Elementary's Historical Society began setting up a beautiful display of our school's history and tradition in the library. When it is complete, be sure to stop by and visit.

What's Happening this coming week: October 21-25

More stories and reading joy for all grade levels, along with some book fair fun.

• Grade 2 will continue their research on Hawaiian Monk Seals and begin creating their beastly art.

• Grade 3-6 will continue to develop their PBLs

• Book Fair preparations will be in full swing for "Arctic Adventure" starting October 28-November 1

• Students who chose to enter the Kailua Public Library's poster contest will be submitting art this week

• Teachers will have some book fair preview time to make their classroom wishlists
