Grade 4 Kalo growing

Two weeks ago, we acquired some dry land kalo that have been surviving in pots and were not in the best condition.

Last week, the students tilled the soil and planted the kalo into their new home.

Today (December 16, 2019), the students helped the water flow through each mini lo’i so all the plants could be watered.

This act of digging and diverting water was an important concept for them to understand as they study how the ancient Hawaiians grew kalo as the staple crop.

The students also observed that the plants did not look healthy but are hopeful the plants will adjust to their new environment and thrive.
